I'm excited this month to get to kick off the August AW Blog Chain! Last time I started a blog chain, I began it with abstinence pants, so this time, I'll try to be a little more lenient on the person who has to follow me!
As writers, I think we often wonder if our work has the potential to break out and be a hot commodity. But never fear, writers! There seems to be more and more evidence that no matter what is said, there's room for what you're writing, and no one can predict what's going to sell, sell, sell in entertainment today. We need only to look at some past successes to realize that sometimes, no one sees it coming...
Honestly, who ever thought that a television show following the "love lives" of real live meerkats would catch on? But nevertheless, Meerkat Manor is about to start what I believe to be its fourth season, and even I have to admit I'm enthralled by sexy Meerkat Mitch, that hunka burnin' love...
Another one I didn't see coming? Twilight. Yep, even as an avid Harry Potter fan, I must admit Twilight's success shocked me a little. After all, whoever heard of vegetarian vampires? I guess that's one reason the book didn't soak me in, because I'm a little too violent. I guess I needed some blood-sucking goodness to keep me interested. I suppose most people were okay with the fact that the opening chapter didn't include any neck biting, though, considering how well it's done. I wonder what that says about me? But I digress.
And, last but not least is The Secret. Really? Really. Really! Really?!?!? I guess people just want to believe so badly that there's a way to make their lives better, a way to make it all simple. Maybe if they think about it really hard, meditate on it, exactly as they want it, that twenty bucks or so they paid for that book will come back to them.
What book, tv, or movie successes surprised you?
Up next is Delirious. Please go visit some of the other fabulous blogs in this blog chain (or, maybe if you think really hard about them, your computer's browser will bring up their blogs on your screen on its own):

Give the Twilight series another chance ~ it's really good! They're not REALLY "vegetarians" ~ it's just that they don't drink HUMAN blood. ;o)
But nonhumananimaltarian would be quite a... mouthful. ;)
Well they did pick up an actor from the HP series to play the not so bad vampire in the first movie. Don't know, vampire romances are not my thing. Angel/Buffy been there done that. Then again, I am a guy.
I am shocked and appalled by the success of *insert name of any reality show here*. Except Groomer Has It. My children forced me to get sucked in--but I still hated the host and every judge on it.
I've been told that I HAVE to read the Twilight series, but I'm reluctant. I think it's because I was a huge Buffy fan, and I don't know if I'll actually like any other takes on the vampire/human love story - between Buffy-and-Angel and Buffy-and-Spike, I'm content to leave it alone.
Plus, I'm mostly out of the angsty, brooding phase, so it doesn't entertain me to read about other angsty brooders as much as it once did.
First, I'm surprised at all of the reality shows that make it. Ice Road Truckers, Deadliest Catch, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Shear Genius, etc, etc, etc. Not saying I haven't found myself sucked into their little trap, but seriously, a show about crab fishermen in Alaska?????
And related to that, many of these trade based reality stars have written memoirs. The worst part, I was tempted to pick up the one by two guys from Deadliest Catch. Really, do I need to READ about it too?????
Four words: ball in a cup.
Really?
I am shocked and appalled that E.R. is STILL on the air. I watched that back...when was it? 1978? Feels that way.
I am in the middle of the last book of twilight. And i think its the concept of "wrong love" that drew the high school crowd in. Its not THE most amazing set of books i have ever read, but its easy light reading that doesnt really make you think, which is why teenagers love it.
I like deadliest catch. Its so interesting! so there!
I cant beleive people liked harry potter. Go figure. i couldnt get past the first book (i know i just blasphemed in some way... sorry)
I was coerced into reading The Secret last month and I really wish I hadn't bothered. *sigh*
Tig- perhaps...
emily- yes, it would be! I wonder if squirrelbloodotatian is a word?
rafael- which actor? I didn't know about this one.
K- Groomer Has It...it shocks me that this is THE one you like, lol. But then again, they did have the Pet Psychic on there once...
Danielle- I may try to slog through it when I'm done with the book I'm reading now. We shall see.
heatheraynne- Yes, the fact that The Simple Life was so popular still makes me cringe.
MJ- HAHAHA!
freshhell- I didn't know it was still coming on! Wow.
sarah- yes, you definitely just blashemed. Consider yourself on notice...further HP disses could result in your dismissal. And when I say "dismissal," I mean the ninja squirrels are coming...
melanie- the question is, did you buy or borrow?
The lead is played by Robert Pattison who played Cedric Diggory in Globlet of Fire.
Here is the link to his HP Wiki page:

Sweet. Thanks, rafael.
Thanks a lot for opening up the August blog chain with such a great post. I live in Bangladesh and have hardly any idea about the things you wrote here. Last night, I watched the movie, “The Pursuit of Happyness” in HBO.
razib- sorry if I confused you. Didn't mean to! I never saw the Pursuit of Happyness...hopefully you enjoyed it, though!
BORROW.
I think if you get through the first book, you might learn to love the Twilight books more. I learned to love Harry Potter.
But that's the thing, Karen...I don't really want to read something I have to learn to like. I think a lot of people compare HP and Twilight because they are both YA, but when you get down to it, they aren't anything alike.
Gee, you made it easy for me with that Twilight bit :D
snowflake- oh, lol...ou're one of "those,"huh?
I don't understand the allure of vampires, period. I was surprised that Buffy was such a big deal.
Actually I was surprised Grey's Anatomy ended up with such a huge cult following. I remember the first (or second) time it came on because I was leaving my parents' house to go back to college and they had turned it on. I was like, "Why are y'all watching that? It's just a rip off of ER. I'm not gonna watch it."
And now I'm a woman obsessed.
Yeah, I know, Ash...vampires are gross to me. What's attractive about blood drinking?
I don't know... watching meerkats is more fun than humans. Meerkats are still cute when they're angry. The same isn't true of most humans I know. I think it's the lack of fur.
Polenth- especially when said meerkats include Mitch. Hotness.
I read the first book, Twilight, and was kind of eh about it and have no real desire to keep reading the series. I actually don't mind vampire stuff but the main characters in Twilight irritated the crap out of me. If I were fifteen, however, I'd probably adore it.
For those of you that hated Twilight, Smart Bitches did a post on a spoof trailer for the movie... it's hilarious.

amblus- it just started too slowly for me to ever get into it.
sassee- haha! Love it.
Wait, Meerkat Manor? Is that real?
Wait, ER is still on? Really? Why?
And I'm with Razib - I haven't heard of most of what y'all are talking about. :) I suspect I'm happier for it. :D
As for shows that surprised me that they even reached the air... Reality shows that involve following the lives of, well, whoever. Like that blonde playboy bunny who married that really old guy, whatever her name is.
Laurie- you better believe Meerkat Manor is real! It is pretty fantastic, might I add.
